Reiki is considered a hands-on and distance energy healing system.
Whether administered through hands-on or distance, the methodology of Reiki uses the human chakra system as a guide and vehicle for the transmission of Reiki energy.
The receiver can either sit on a chair for a short session or lie on their back on a massage table or comparable surface for a longer session. There is a series of hand positions used over each of the main chakra centers while Reiki is being transmitted to the recipient. The hands, themselves, are held with fingers together, as this helps concentrate the drawing upon and sending of Reiki, as opposed to hands held with fingers apart. While, as in any system, there are variations on the sites for delivering Reiki, these basically consist of positions over the crown chakra, over the eyes, over the ears, over the shoulders and collarbones, upper chest and heart region, solar plexus region, navel region, hip side areas, over knees, and on the bottom of the feet. The flow of Reiki energy is initiated by the Reiki practitioner upon the placing of their hands in position and the intent made to heal.
As Reiki works at the deepest levels for inner, transformational healing, as well as at the more obvious, physical levels, the receiver’s experience of a Reiki session can vary from little or no recognized “reaction” to some rather dramatic and pleasant results. I have always found Reiki to provide at least a conscious experience of deep relaxation which usually carries through to a particularly deep and healing sleep on the night following a Reiki session during that day - and oftentimes beyond that time. In any case, whether “felt” by the recipient or not, the benefits of Reiki are received and work for the benefit of the recipient for several days, or longer, following the session. Its benefits can be subtly or dramatically felt, and it is not unusual that I receive feedback days or weeks later from clients who did not “feel anything” during the session but who later recognized and enjoyed benefits which they clearly attributed to Reiki.
As the flow of Reiki through the receiver’s body may result in, among other things, the release of toxins stored in the body, it is recommended that the receiver drink good amounts of water for several days following a session, to help flush out such toxins and support the body in the healing process.
