Essential Reiki by Diane Stein is a recurring reference book as an introduction to Reiki.

Tapestry of Healing by Jeri Mills, M.D. is a wonderful accounting of the use of Reiki in medicine, by a Medical Doctor, with many great anecdotal stories, as well.

For those wishing scientifically-oriented readings substantiating the basis for Reiki and energy healing systems in general, there is:

Vibrational Medicine by Richard Gerber, M.D.

and

Energy Medicine by James Oschman, Ph. D.

Or

Infinite Mind by Dr. Valerie Hunt

Since understanding Reiki has much to do with our human energy systems - our system of Chakras - I would also recommend two highly readable books by Gary Zukav: first The Seat of the Soul, and then The Heart of the Soul.

In like manner, but of a bit more challenging nature is The Chakras and Esoteric Healing by Zachary F. Landsdowne, Ph.D.

There are many other references, of course, but I think these represent a good balance and spectrum for those interested in pursuing the subject further.
